Troika First Friday Opening

Friday, June 4th - Troika Gallery will be featuring the new work of Gibby Waitzkin during its First Friday opening. Troika is a contemporary craft gallery that grew out of the creative partnership between three local artists, Silvie Granatelli, Susan Icove and Gibby Waitzkin. Each month Troika displays the breadth of Floyd’s artistic community by exhibiting the work of a different local artist; this month Troika is featuring one of its own.

Gibby’s new body of work, “A Look Inside and Out”, is sneak preview of a much larger installation to open at Sarvisberry Studio and Gallery in fall 2010. The images of captured moments are displayed through the dimpled panes and scarred frames of old windows. The compositions incorporate 4x5 sepia toned photographs taken by Gibby in 1974 as part of a graduate program in photography and printmaking, botanicals grown in gardens of family and friends in Floyd County, birds’ nests gathered from local yards and woods - all imbedded in handmade paper.

These elements reflect and mirror Gibby’s own training and life experiences - the growing and harvesting of the fibers and the flowers; the gathering of discarded objects; the shredding, cooking, beating, and pouring of the pulp; the photography and digital printing; the composition - the poetic expression of a life or a moment glimpsed through a window pane. It is an intimate portrayal, echoing cherished memories of people, places, and objects.

Troika Gallery is located in downtown Floyd in The Station building, 203 South Locust Street, across from the Country Store.
